Kennebunkport, Maine

By Denise Givens

Maine has been called Vacationland since the 1930’s and with the beautiful mountains, pristine lakes, numerous charming islands, and long coastline, one can see why it has been so popular for many years.  As the ocean always soothes my soul, one of our favorite summer vacation spots in Maine is Kennebunkport.  This coastal town has beautiful sandy beaches and rocky coastal cliffs – perfect for any ocean lover!

Dock Square is the town center and has many restaurants, clam & lobster shacks, boutiques, ice cream shops, and amazing sunset views from the marina inlet.   Kennebunkport is also a great location to use as a base and take day trips around southern and mid coast Maine as there are many beautiful small towns to visit.  We highly recommend a road trip to see all of the lovely lighthouses that are within 1-2 hours drive.  If you love shopping, there are many factory outlet stores in Freeport – infamous as the home of L.L.Bean.   Fresh seafood and lobster are plentiful here, so lobster rolls or a whole lobster dinner are always a must for us!

Kennebunkport was a fishing village many years ago, and there are several historic sea captains’ homes right in town that operate as country inns or small bed and breakfasts.  One of our favorites is the Captain Fairfield Inn.  The inns are walking distance to Dock Square and perfectly located for a morning walk around the rocky coastline to listen to the sound of the waves with coffee in hand.

Kennebunkport is also very popular in December, and while winter in Maine is not for the faint of heart, their Holiday Prelude celebration is also an unforgettable experience!
