I recently read a book in the “how-to” category by Jeff Olsen, renowned entrepreneur and speaker, called The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success. It may seem unusual to most; a 20 year old exploring self-help novels isn’t the usual free time activity of most collegiate students. Yet this is Olsen’s point exactly.
The text revolves around the philosophy of turning simple decisions over a lifetime into tangible results that compound on each other each time they are made. Olsen suggests that we are never standing still, rather we are either moving forward on the “success curve”, or easily slipping down the “failure curve”. Surprisingly, 95% of us make choices that, at the time, seem to have no consequence, but gradually hold us away from our goals.
Olsen frames ideas engrained within all successful people into a fun and inspiring read that I would recommend for anyone, regardless of your aspirations. It’s never too late, or too early, to become part of the 5%.
