For those seeking a backcountry ski experience, look no further than our own backyard in Colorado. Often overlooked by those seeking a reservation at one of the 10th Mountain Division Huts, the Hidden Treasure Yurts offer a cozier option to seek out some great backcountry skiing. Sitting close to timberline at 11,200 feet, the yurts provide backcountry enthusiasts with reasonable and simple accommodations in the White River National Forest.
With most runs requiring a quick 15-30 minute tour up the side of New York Mountain, backcountry skiers are rewarded with beautiful views of the White River National Forest.
For those seeking the experience without the desire to travel 6.2 miles and 2,100+ feet of elevation gain while carrying all your gear, the yurts can also be accessed via snowmobile on a forest road. If you hold out and self-propel yourself up to the yurts, you are rewarded with a nice descent back to the car!
As Colorado’s snowpack is notoriously unstable we always recommend approaching backcountry adventures with caution, adequate gear, and preparation.
